Benjamin Lessing Advocates New Strategy for Reducing Cartel Violence

A recent Economist article by political scientist Benjamin Lessing proposes a shift in how authorities address Latin American cartels. Rather than relying on aggressive force, Lessing advocates for incentive-based strategies to curb cartel violence and improve security. He suggests that policies encouraging less destructive behavior among cartel members could reduce violence while making communities safer. This fresh perspective on cartel management encourages innovative, non-militaristic approaches.

Lessing's insights are part of a broader long-running research. SOC ACE are proud to have funded part of the research under the following project: Developing government information and accountability systems for combating serious organized crime: Medellín demonstration project.
