Alina Rocha Menocal joins panel at Carnegie Middle East Center workshop on ‘Illicit networks, transnational links, regional politics and policy responses’
Alina Rocha Menocal is attending a panel discussion on ‘Studying Illicit Networks in the Levant and Beyond’ at the Carnegie Middle East Center's workshop focused on the growth of illicit networks in the Levant since the onset of Syria’s civil war. The workshop, titled ‘Illicit Networks: Transnational Links, Regional Politics & Policy Responses,’ examines the increasing influence of these networks on governance and regional relations.
With transnational links and the impact of American and European Union sanctions against the Syrian regime, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and other aligned actors, illicit networks have been growing in the region. In certain cases these networks can overlap with state institutions, creating shadow economies and posing significant security challenges. The workshop aims to assess the political capital of these networks, their potential to act as political spoilers, and what lessons can be learned from Asian and Latin American case studies. Experts from the Levant, Asia, and Latin America will collaborate to develop a comprehensive policy framework to address this emerging threat.
The panel in particular will discuss specifcally how illicit networks should be approached and also what critical approaches tell us.
